Despite these arguments that may in fact support the causality in one direction, it is often the case that the poor will be more vulnerable to depression, for all the reasons previous commentators have given. Extreme poverty often leads leads in fact to the loss of self worth and even to lack of motivation. If one spends some time among poor communities, it will not be hard to come across people (of all age and gender) who have given up looking for jobs, hoping for better life, precisely because they have been discouraged. These same people often will show signs of depression.
