Masculinity advertising essay

In the video Dreamworlds , a major theme explored throughout the documentary was the idea of multiple women. In many hip hop and rap videos women are forced to share men. These women are shown completely content to be vying for the same men, often times even enjoying it. The message becomes that to be a man means to have multiple women. Again this is a tactic that comes through in many advertisements. In my particular playlist the Detour advertisement expresses this idea. The image shows a man in bed with three women, all who appear to be naked, sans one woman wearing panties, and another wearing one heel. The phrase on the image, “You Can Never Have Too Much of a GOOD Thing” posits women as commodities to collect, and that a man can never have too much of. In the Old Spice advertisement women are shown as commodities in a much more explicit way. The image of a razor accompanied by the phrase, “Just Like Your Ex, it’s Completely Disposable”. The connection here is the disposability of women tied to manhood.
