By 1982, Kaczynski's bombs became more destructive. A secretary at Vanderbilt University and a professor at the University of California at Berkeley both sustained serious injuries from Kaczynski's explosive packages. After a pause of several years, Kaczynski resumed his bombing campaign. His first fatality occurred in December 1985, when a computer store owner was killed by a device placed outside his shop. Over the next decade, Kaczynski would send numerous other bombs, resulting in two more deaths and many more injuries.

At the University of Michigan, Kaczynski specialized in complex analysis , specifically geometric function theory . His intellect and drive impressed his professors. "He was an unusual person. He was not like the other graduate students. He was much more focused about his work. He had a drive to discover mathematical truth," said professor Peter Duren . "It is not enough to say he was smart," said George Piranian , another of his Michigan math professors. [32] During his time at Michigan, Kaczynski earned 5 B's and 12 A's in his 18 courses. However in 2006, he said his "memories of the University of Michigan are NOT pleasant   ... the fact that I not only passed my courses (except one physics course) but got quite a few A's, shows how wretchedly low the standards were at Michigan." [31]

All of this reiterates the point that Kaczynski is no hero whatsoever. The person who wrote "Industrial Society and Its Future," is a fanatic. And as is sometimes the case, fanatics can take things to the tragic extreme. Yet there is something to be taken away from his words if you read closely; it's that we give up a piece of ourselves whenever we adjust to conform to society's standards. That, and we're too plugged in. We're letting technology take over our lives, willingly. It's the sort of thing that doesn't take a madman dressed up like a prophet to tell us; it's all too evident. Kaczynski, to steal a phrase from the tech world, was just an early adopter of these thoughts. Yet his warning will probably forever go unnoticed because of the horrific deeds he carried out to get his message across.

It should be pointed out that as the emperor and the inventor went through the first half of the chess board, things were fairly uneventful. The inventor was given spoonfuls of rice, then bowls of rice, then barrels. By the end of the first half of the chess board, the inventor had accumulated one large field’s worth (4 billion grains), and the emperor did start to take notice. It was as they progressed through the second half of the chessboard that the situation quickly deteriorated. Incidentally, with regard to the doublings of computation, that’s about where we stand now–there have been slightly more than 32 doublings of performance since the first programmable computers were invented during World War II.
